Fucoustic is no cover band. It isn’t a novelty act either. “Fucoustic plays Fugazi“ is the title of this CD and that is precisely what is on their agenda.
Andreas Gantner and Daniel Amann only play songs by Fugazi on acoustic guitars. Yet it is the big amount of respect and the healthy dose of curiosity used by the duo in their approach to the work of one of the most important hardcore bands ever which instantly convinces the listener of their honest intentions. They pour so much emotion, energy and openness into their re-workings that finally even Ian MacKaye, grail holder of Fugazi, gave his consent for the production of this CD.
And the results are astonishing. The tracks chosen already prove that these two musicians are true, albeit critical fans who are not concerned with reproducing the hits, but rather with producing a real homage to their idols. Some rough edges were smoothed and the acoustic guitars tend to keep the rhythm and melodies flowing gently. Other times they go wild. Tension rises and is released – just like the original, only in a completely different way.
Fucoustic deconstructs harmonies and song structures which are at times complex, polish them a little, and put them back together again. Everything is still easily identifiable, but it seems lighter, more free and slightly more accessible. Some tracks seemingly start to walk down alternative country paths; an unexpected – yet all the more positive – surprise.
It takes a lot of guts to take on such a challenge. The eyes and ears of the fans are too attentive, especially in the hardcore genre, watching over their idols. The fact that both artists are fans themselves, that they continue to work on their project in an open, honest and straightforward manner, and that they have been able to produce a corresponding image by playing great shows definitely proves Fucoustic’s commitment.
Since 2002 they have played the Chelsea / Vienna, the Kapu / Linz, the Poolbar / Feldkirch and the Rauchklub / Feldkirch among others. |
